Intel Gets Ambitious in PC Graphics with Hiring of Former AMD Exec
Is Intel getting into PC graphics cards?
The company's latest hire strongly suggests so. On Midweek, the chip maker appear it hired quondam AMD executive Raja Koduri to develop "loftier-end discrete graphics solutions" for Intel.
Koduri was master builder of AMD's Radeon Technologies Grouping, which is best known for developing PC gaming graphics cards. He'll now lead Intel'southward newly formed, just mysterious "Core and Visual Computing Group."
Intel declined to say whether whatsoever of these graphics solutions would involve gaming. But they'll exist designed for a "wide range of computing segments," according to a company statement.
Koduri's work will as well focus on expanding Intel's research in non only graphics and imaging, but also artificial intelligence and data middle tech.
None of this bodes well for AMD and Nvidia, which dominate the dedicated PC graphic cards space.
The graphics cards from these companies are not only popular with gamers, but are being used in information centers. Nvidia, for instance, has been selling GPUs to power supercomputers and A.I. machine learning technology, which has helped drive the company's revenues.
At the same time, graphics engineering is becoming more vital with the ascent of virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift.
Intel's need for the tech was underscored earlier this week when it partnered with AMD's Radeon grouping to build a defended GPU in an upcoming Intel processor for gaming laptops.
Koduri is coming to Intel with over 25 years of experience in visual calculating, including in PCs, game consoles and consumer devices. Prior to joining AMD, he worked at Apple as director of graphics compages.
Koduri addressed his upcoming role change on Twitter, and said he was "beyond excited" about his new position.
It will be a massive understatement to say that I am beyond excited nearly my new function at Intel. I haven't yet seen anything written that groks the magnitude of what I am pursuing. The scale of information technology is not even remotely close to what I was doing before. Will say more when gear up!

A memo Koduri wrote to AMD employees nearly his departure was likewise obtained by United kingdom tech publication Hexus. In it he said: "I experience more and more than that I want to pursue my passion beyond hardware and explore driving broader solutions."
Intel declined to offering details backside its new Cadre and Visual Computing Group. However in a statement, the company's primary engineering officer Murthy Renduchintala said of the hiring: "We accept exciting plans to aggressively expand our computing and graphics capabilities."
